This project was the result of a collaboration between Souren Papazian, Kristian De Leon and Myself. Souren wrote the code and Kristian wrote all the music. I handled all of the art, animation and writing for the game, while we all met in the middle on game design.
Souren and Kristian came up with the initial concept of grabbing flying letters out of the sky, called “Bwirds”, as a mechanic for a spelling game. I took that inital seed and developed a narrative world in which you play as a character living in a tree with a grabber contraption that catches bwirds. At the base of the tree, writers visit you in rounds of buses with requests for special words. Your job is to assemble words with the bwirds you catch in order to satisfy their vocabulary quests and progress in the game.
The game has a cozy and casual feel and scales well for all learning levels. It sold over 1,000 copies and was chosen as a Staff Pick.
